VIRGINIA AUTO DEALER www.vada.com 12 body brace for eight months. The recov- ery was brutal, but, when my doctor finally released me, I was open to going where God wanted me to be. The accident was a major life-change, and I trusted that God had a plan. I had never been in politics before. I had a friend in the House of Delegates who encouraged me to run and chal- lenge the then-incumbent. My friends and family encouraged me as well, and I felt that it was the right thing to do. I felt that I could make a difference, and I believe that I have. Q: What are you looking forward to most in your new endeavors? Well, VADA is a quality organization. I know a lot of the dealers I will be working with, and I can’t think of a better organization than VADA to work with. I think I can make a differ- ence here as well. I will also have a little more time with my family, who means everything to me. My wife, Paula, and I have two kids, Emily and Will. As an elected o cial, the hours were long, and I was gone a lot. I worked hard to keep my commitments to my constituents and to my family – I remember many times driving ve hours to watch my daugh- ter play basketball. I am hopeful that my work/ life balance will be a little easier to accomplish. Q: If you look back at your life and career, what are three things that you have learned? Well, for one, government never moves quickly, it develops over time, and that is probably a good thing. So, I would say patience is something that I have learned. Next, I would say that I have learned a respect for institutions. I spent 18 years serving in the oldest body of the government in a state that produced seven presidents of the United States. Regardless of whether you agree with the outcome of all legislation or not, democracy and being part of the governance process is a privilege and one that has been fought for and earned. I never took the process lightly. I wish that more citizens would become involved in the governing process. And finally, like the verse in the Bible says, a good name is worth more than silver and gold. I really believe that. After 18 years of public service, all I wanted was to leave with my good name intact – I believe that I did that.
